Common Side Effects Felt During Reiki

Massage table

When I first received Reiki energy healing, I was in the 10th grade. My mom and I went to a Reiki share, which is a casual event held by a Reiki Master to allow for students to practice giving Reiki to people. They are free!

I wasn't expecting anything in particular beforehand. I was very open-minded and was therefore open to whatever experience I would have. I didn't know anything about Reiki or what happened during Reiki sessions.

I was one of the last people to be practiced on. The mini sessions were around 10 minutes in length, so while I did not get the full Reiki experience, I could still feel my energy shift slightly. Not a lot... but slightly.

To my recollection, I didn't receive Reiki energy healing again until 3 or 4 years after that. I don't remember the specifics, but I remember the experience being VERY different from the first time around.

I didn't know that you could feel different body sensations while receiving Reiki. I remember that, the second time around, I immediately became relaxed -- but in a way that was uncomfortable. I always lived my life in autopilot, so I was not used to fully relaxing my body and not fidgeting. I almost felt constrained to the massage table and unable to move, even if I wanted to. I also felt a warm sensation throughout my body, and that part felt the nicest!

For some people, during or after the Reiki session, they feel unwell or not "great". This is because Reiki has a detoxifying effect -- all the bad energies are being removed from your body, and Reiki energy is being installed where it needs to be for the utmost healing. This isn't always comfortable for people.

Ever since my concussion back in February of 2020, receiving Reiki has this type of effect on me -- whether from someone else or through self-Reiki. During and especially afterward, I tend to feel fatigued and nauseous. I also tend to suffer from a headache. That's why it's crucial to rest, relax, and hydrate as much as possible after a Reiki session!

Again, every person is different. Some people feel nothing at all during or after their Reiki sessions. That doesn't mean the Reiki didn't flow properly! Reiki operates in the best way it can for every individual who receives Reiki energy healing. What matters is how the Reiki works to heal you in the long run.

Below is a list of common side effects felt by people who receive Reiki energy healing.

  • Seeing colors

  • Feeling hot

  • Feeling cold

  • Fluctuating between hot and cold sensations

  • Feeling a "breeze" run through your body

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Excess thirst

  • Fatigue/tiredness

  • Headache

  • Boost in energy

  • Happiness

  • Sadness

  • Relaxed

  • Body aches

  • Anger (this is especially true if negative and/or suppressed memories pop up during or after the Reiki session)

  • Increased intuition

  • More present/aware to yourself, your surroundings, etc.

  • More sensitive to other people's energies (friends, family, co-workers, strangers)

  • Increased creativity

  • Mental clarity

  • Changed thoughts/belief systems

  • Increased interest in bettering your health (mental, emotional, physical, Spiritual)

  • Increased self-care measures

  • Wanting to have more alone time

  • Feeling more inspired

  • Feeling more studious, especially of holistic, metaphysical, and/or occult activities

  • Seeing Spirit Guides

  • Seeing passed-on loved ones

Since everyone experiences the Reiki energy differently, the list could go on, but I'll leave it at the above list for now. In my opinion, any side effects felt are worth it in order to heal yourself!

Much love,

Brittney xx
